Growing up in Italy, I never thought that something so common and ordinary as motorcycling could change my life. For the people around me, motorcycles were simply a means of transportation, and it was such for me too, for many years. But like it does for so many of us, it also become my way to escape, to be different and independent.

The first feeling I can recall from riding a motorcycle was the sensation of freedom and independence It gave me. I was 14; I had no money and I was riding an old 50cc enduro bike that I bought using my life’s savings. I already felt I could conquer the world, and I know many of you felt the same. Motorcycles get under your skin. Is it the feeling of the wind pushing against our bodies, or is just sense of freedom that comes with being on the open road? Both?

Whatever your answer is, the reality is there’s nowhere to hide when we ride our beloved steel steeds. Life has a way of weighing us down with responsibility and routine, making it hard to break out of our comfort zones. Motorcycling changes that.

Despite what happened in the past 2 years, with the pandemic and everything, traveling has become one of the booming businesses of the past decade. There are many people that, without any previous experience in motorcycling or traveling, set off for a trip on a motorcycle. The Internet is now almost saturated with people taking the open road and sharing their adventure with the world.

As easy as it seems, doing that is not easy at all. Some people prepare for years, others just pack and go without thinking too much about it. The result is somehow the same: a change in perspective and priorities.

Facing things we are not used to is what changes us. But not because we need to modify ourselves; the change is already within us. We just need to acknowledge it and the only way is to expose ourselves to things our regular life doesn’t necessarily exposes us to. How many times do we talk to strangers? How many times are we forced to adapt to our surrounding environment? How many times do we find ourselves forced into an unknown place?

These are just few of the situations that an adventure on a motorcycle will expose us. A trip on a motorcycle tests us in ways we’ve never been tested before—it uncovers traits of our personality that sometimes we don’t even know are there. And it will bring out who we really are.
