The Outrush R has garnered both DOT and ECE approvals. But what sets it apart from many of the other modular helmets is its dual P/J homologation. This means that the helmet retains its DOT and ECE approvals, whether the modular portion is open or closed. Still, as you can imagine, riding with the modular portion open does not provide as much protection as when it is closed.

Closed up with the vents open, air movement through the helmet is average. You can feel it through the chin vent and less so through the chimney vent. With the face shield open, plenty of air flows through. However, when you drop down the sun visor, airflow is reduced.

The visor blocks out an appreciable amount of glare and is very useful. It’s dark without being too dark. And, it’s nice to have some sun protection without having to tuck sunglasses inside your helmet and deal with the reduced comfort of some sunglass’ arms. Unfortunately, Sena doesn’t state whether the visor is UV blocking.

扩展帽舌是容易的, even with a gloved hand. All that’s necessary is to slide a button on the left side of the helmet up or down.

As for the helmet’s clear visor, it provides decent optics. It can be easily opened and closed with a gloved hand using one of the two small tabs protruding from its front. There are four detent positions from closed to completely open. Unfortunately, while the visor has two open detents, it’s missing a de-misting detent for those times that you just want a little air to help defog the visor.

The helmet’s comms are controlled with a relatively flush-fitting three-button module. It’s on the left side of the helmet and towards the rear. It also has a status light to tell you about the unit’s status (e,g, device search mode, power status (on/off etc.).

The reach to the module is a bit awkward, but moving it towards the rear makes the helmet’s overall profile slimmer and perhaps cuts down on wind noise a bit. In any event, it’s not hard to use.

Included with the helmet is a quick start guide that tells you how to turn it on and off. But at least in my case, there was no other operational documentation to be found. As such, you’ll have to use the good ol’ Internet for more operating info.

For me, that was a bummer because there are several different button push scenarios that most users will want to know right from the start. Things like how do I pair with other riders? How do I make and receive phone calls? How do I use and operate the FM radio? I think you get my point.

The shortish range is because the Outrush R is a Bluetooth communicator. It’s not a dynamic mesh system that uses other communicators to extend its communications range. In my book, the Outrush R’s range is acceptable as a Bluetooth communicator, especially considering the setup’s price. More on that later.

Sena also says that the Outrush R can link with up to four riders. Again, I did not have the opportunity to test this function.

声音/噪音

Once the devices paired, my experience was quite good. I could listen to music and the turn by turn directions from the GPS without any issues.

But the larger issue is the amount of available volume. Riding around town, you can hear what you want/need to hear. But as speeds increase, there just isn’t enough volume to let you hear them clearly. At highway speeds, you know that the speakers are on, but understanding what’s coming out of them can be a problem.

Overall, the Outrush R is a decent helmet communications combo. It’s probably best in an urban commuter role with little to no highway riding. It connects easily to your devices and for listening to music from your phone, or its built in FM radio, or making/receiving phone calls, it does a decent job. But as speed increases, so does the noise, so using these devices can become problematic.

If there’s one thing that Sena has done an excellent job of, it’s providing an outstanding price to value quotient. The Outrush R is an ECE/DOT certified helmet with built in communications coming in with a very respectable and somewhat miserly MSRP of $259.
