Hello again, ADVrider Inmates, hangers-on, and random drop-ins—and welcome to our weekly photo feature. We are starting off this week with a photo that could look somewhat ordinary . . . but then rewards a second viewing. This shot by@akabetonshows an airhead Beemer—a 1995 R100 GSPD—on the rider’s annual “Backroads to Bella Coola Trip” at Dog Creek (Fraser Plateau) in British Columbia, and we chose it for our Featured Image because of its purity and the strength of the photographer’s vision. We’ll let akabeton say a few words, and then we’ll add our own thoughts.

A small group of “Airhead” riders have been doing the 8–10 day ride for 12 years now. We always do the trip early fall and seldom get bad weather. For the past two years I have done the ride solo, which I enjoyed immensely. We encounter all kinds of wildlife, bears, moose, deer and many more. We wild camp most of the trip.

这是一个simple image, bike and environment, nothing more, but look more closely, if you will. That R100, nicely exposed, clear as the B.C. air, is a good-looking bike with a substantial load that doesn’t overwhelm the lines of the bike, and that set of soft luggage acting as a dual-tank-bag is interesting. But look where it’s going. That road, in decent shape and untrafficked, follows the rules of photo composition, angling up to . . . well, could be anywhere. And above the bike, catching the afternoon sunlight, is a river, probably the Fraser, and the surrounding hills, and behind it, the Coast Mountains (probably), where B.C. meets the world, via the Pacific Ocean. It’s a bike with places to go and nothing obstructing it, and everything about the picture, even the side of the dirt road below the bike, so close you could reach out and pick up a handful, is appealing. Akabeton shot the picture last fall.

Rim shots

Cannonshotand featuresInmate Ajacks“riding his 2010 KLR (with Cannonshot) along the White Rim Trail” in Utah around the middle of March.

This was Jack’s first trip to the backcountry in Moab and he had a blast riding rugged paths while enjoying bright sunshine and cool temperatures.

And here is Ajacks from another viewpoint, still on the White Rim Trail and still on his Kawasaki. “Jack is near the edge of one of the many drop offs that are common along the route. Spectacular scenery and plenty of challenges along the way. Temps in the 30s in the morning and 50s–60s in the afternoon.”

And in the picture below, photographer Cannonshot with his 2014 KTM 500 EXC. We’ll let him have the last word on these images.

An early season ride on the White Rim Trail at Moab (UT) earlier this week. Permits are required which limit the number of motorized vehicles on this path in Canyonlands National Park. Only two permits had been issued when Ajacks and I got ours mid-morning. One of the switchbacks only recently opened as it had been closed with some patches of ice and snow. Beautiful sunshine and scenery to enjoy while riding some often narrow and rugged paths.

Orange soda

Lots of variation here: dirt, gravel, one lane blacktop, two lane blacktop, etc.

And below, another shot from The Bear, “taken at Octoberfest in Munich some years back.” It’s the Wall of Death, which is “still, er, alive!” and which is being occupied by a “very old Indian,” but not the world’s oldest.

Wyoming trails

The wandering stretch of packed earth below is along the Wind River range near Pinedale, in Wyoming, and was photographed by@STG06几年前,当Kling绕过那个神话般的状态时。

And here is one more from STG06, a shot taken several years ago that “hints at how the Pacific Ocean often cools the immediate coast. Taken along the Matole Road on the Lost Coast of California south of Ferndale during a September ride ferrying the V-Strom from Alberta to Palm Springs, California.” Wow, that’s a lucky V-Strom!

Birthday Joy

The three photos below were taken by@ADVNERDNZwhile enjoying a birthday ride around Lake Taupō in New Zealand a week or three ago.

That’s a 2020 Benelli TRK 502X catching the low sunlight. What do you think, is that a dawn, or an evening sun? We’re betting on morning.

Close shave and a social evening

Editor Zac supplies the next three images and a bit of a hair-raising story about them. He was “scouting for the 2019 Fundy Adventure Rally” in the Canadian maritimes with the “then-new Honda CRF450L,” which he says was perfect for the job on gravel sections but a bit of a plank on pavement, referring to the seat, not the construction material.

As you can see, the Fundy Rally went through some fun terrain, including this wind farm. I was on the top of this hill system when I spotted the storm clouds coming from miles away. I ended up stuck in this system and actually dodged a fairly nasty crack-up when I took a wrong turn down an uncharted hill, just as the rain started. Traction went to basically zero on the slippery rocks, and an ATV rider passed me on the trail, then turned back to warn me of a very steep drop-off that wouldn’t have been visible with my goggles fogged up in the rain—until it was too late. Thanks, random dude!

“Anyway, battled that mess out and made it home, only to turn right around and ride back in to the Moto Social hangout in town later that night. Pretty sure I was the only rider there on a proper enduro bike. At least the hipsters were kind enough to let me hang out with them.”

Mixed bag

The 2016 Triumph Tiger 800XRT in the photo below was a “try-out” for@我骑, who wanted to find out what it was like to ride a Tiger and says it “Hurt much worse than the pictures showed.” He didn’t go into detail about that, but did find a solution to his Tiger Mortis problem hanging on the wall. See below.

About to part it out when I saw the front assembly from my old NC700 hanging on the wall. Little machine work and a lot of imagination later I have a very fun great handling bike. Improvise!

A handsome bit of work on that NC-Tiger. This was just a few months ago.

@tjilpisent us the pic below of a Harley-Davidson FXR Superglide he borrowed for a little tour on the Emerald Isle.

There are pubs in England?

这是一个really nice part of the UK for walks and there are a few good pubs too.

While touring around northern California last spring on what he says is a “variety of adventure bikes,”@Munsterlanderand buddies stopped to look at the redwoods.

“I just squatted down low to the ground and aimed my iPhone up, to try to get the bikes and the tree tops in the photo.” Well done!

The best of Washington

In 2007 I (Steve Thornton) set out to ride the 10 best roads in Washington state, along with a borrowed Harley-Davidson and a girlfriend named Maggie. Early on that summer trip we stopped by a farm somewhere in the northwestern part of the state and I shot this pic. I remember a feeling of joy as we rode that morning, the air clean and fresh, the sun behind us, the trip just beginning.

The road up to Mount Baker was a twisty delight, but there was snow at the top and we had to bundle up. The Harley provided good weather protection, soft seats, and lots of room for luggage. No sport bike, but it was surprisingly fun in the twisties.

One of the best roads was a climb up Mt. St. Helens, the volcano that had exploded 27 years earlier. A labyrinthine passage up to the crater, but the weather was bad, and we never did get to see anything but fog up there. Still, worth the trip and the tourist facility at the top is amazing, with a large model of the volcano.

Here’s what we used for a guidebook, Destination Highways Washington, a book by motorcyclists that rates every paved highway in the state. My intention was to ride the top 10, but we only managed nine, shut down late in the trip by weather. Still, a great excursion. It looks like the book calls this road DH (Destination Highways) 2—the second best road in Washington.

And now that I’ve had my say, you can have yours. Let us know if you like what we’re doing here at POTW-ADVrider, and remember, we need your pictures. See you next week!
