We all know the GS lineup is BMW’s most popular series, and for most riders, when they think GS, they think of a big-bore adventure bike with a boxer engine. But just how popular is it? According to BMW, they’ve now built more than one million GS models with that classic boxer powerplant. And, that layout will live on with a new BMW R1300 GS, the company confirms.

The history of the GS is inevitably intertwined with the boxer configuration, as the very first bike in the series, the R80 G/S, came to market in 1980 with an air-cooled boxer engine. Things have changed a lot since then. The airhead motor was replaced by an oilhead design, and then we saw liquid-cooled heads added, with variable valve timing now standard as well. The next-gen GS, the R1300 GS, will be entirely liquid-cooled, and probably feature considerable other electro-trickery to boot, such as a smart cruise control system.

As for the millionth boxer GS produced: It was an R1250 GS (no surprise there, that’s the current model in production) that came off the line on June 21, 2023. Here’s what Dr. Markus Schramm, head of BMW Motorrad, said at the time:

I am therefore very pleased that today, and especially in our “100 Years of BMW Motorrad” anniversary year, we are able to contribute a major milestone to the corporate history of the BMW Group with the one millionth BMW GS motorbike with a boxer engine. I am equally pleased that the unique history of BMW Motorrad models with boxer engines will soon be supplemented by an exciting chapter with numerous innovations with the new R 1300 GS.

There you have it, from the big guy himself: The R1300 GS is confirmed. BMW says we’ll see the bike in early fall:

BMW Motorrad Welt will officially open its doors on 28 September. In the new “heart of the brand” – located directly next to the BMW Motorrad plant site in Berlin-Spandau – the eagerly awaited new BMW R 1300 GS will be presented at an exclusive opening event. Interested fans will have the opportunity to follow the opening ceremony via livestream on the BMW Group and BMW Motorrad social media channels.

Stay tuned for September 28!
