There is a lot of discussion concerning motorcycle helmets. Which is best, quietest, most comfortable, and safest? And one of the significant topics in motorcycle helmet safety is the adoption of arelatively new head protection component in motorcycle helmets called Mips. Mips stands for multi-directional impact protection system and is designed to help reduce head injuries.

Low friction layer

To do so, the system uses a “…low-friction layer inside the helmet that allows a multi-directional movement of 10-15mm on certain angled impacts…” It is intended to help reduce rotational force to the head and your brain. At first, adoption of the new technology was slow, with only a few helmet manufacturers choosing to include the novel system in their helmets, but over the passage of time, more and more manufacturers have decided to include the technology in their helmets.

Helmet manufacturers using Mips

Recently Mips announced that at least 22 helmet manufacturers now use the Mips safety system in at least one of their helmets. Now, companies that are familiar names in the helmet industry use the system in an attempt to reduce rotational force injuries. The list of manufacturers now using the Mips system includes:

  • AUA
  • Alpinestars
  • Arctiva
  • Answer
  • Bell
  • BMW
  • Dainese
  • Fox
  • Icon
  • Just1
  • Kabuto
  • Klim
  • KTM
  • KYT
  • LS2
  • Moose Racing
  • MSR
  • ONEAL
  • Scott
  • Thor
  • Troy Lee Designs
  • Z1R
  • 509

与新的ECE 22.06的实现,h includes a test for rotational energy, it will be interesting to see how non-Mips helmets will handle the new test standards. In addition, with rotational force testing proposed for other helmet test standards, will more manufacturers implement Mips in their helmets? What, if anything, will they have to do to ensure that their helmets can meet the new standards? Stay tuned.
