The Roman Emperor is back in business. After retiring from roadracing years ago, it seems Max Biaggi is growing tired of twiddling his thumbs, and has now become the test pilot for French manufacturer Voxan. He took the company’s all-electric Wattman to new land speed records in 2020, and now, he’s returning from a series of runs in Florida that setnewspeed records in 2021.

Biaggi’s mid-November runs on the Space Florida track at the Kennedy Space Center saw him taking the Wattman to a top speed of 283.182 mph (455.737 km/h, for readers in civilized countries). That’s a world record in the “partially-streamlined electric motorbike under 300 kg” category. That sounds a bit silly and hair-splitting, but it’s how land speed racing works.

Voxan says that “In compliance with FIM (International Motorcyclist Federation) regulations, the speed of the Voxan Wattman was measured, after a rolling start, over 1 km outbound and 1 km return in a time span of less than 2 hours.” The average of those two speeds is the record, under FIM rules—Voxan says the Wattman actually hit 292.204 mph (470.257 km/h) at one point, but did not maintain that speed through the whole run.

Biaggi also piloted the Wattman to a 229.675 mph (369.626 km/h) average speed in a non-streamlined version of the same run, another record. Between these and other runs, Voxan says Biaggi ended up setting 21 world records over a wide range of categories.

Impressive, and no doubt Biaggi is enjoying this second round of racing success, as long as Voxan continues to pump cash into this project.
