Yamahais recalling certain 2016 to 2021 FJR1300 motorcycles. The bike’s Engine Control Unit (ECU) programming designed to prevent gear damage may prevent the engine from accelerating as intended by the rider.

Yamaha’s Part 573 Safety Recall Reportto the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says up to 2,462 FJR1300 motorcycles may have this issue.

In its report, Yamaha says:

“In certain affected motorcycles, when the rider is shifting into second gear under certain conditions, such as if the throttle is applied before the clutch is fully engaged, causing unusually high rpm, the Engine Control Unit (ECU) will react by limiting the maximum engine speed available. This is due to rev limiter programming intended to protect second gear components from abnormal stress. “

Describing the safety risk, Yamaha says:

“However, this rev-limiter programming may be overly restrictive, possibly preventing the acceleration performance the rider anticipates.”

The motorcycles affected by this recall are as follows:

FJR1300 repair

The repairs required are not insubstantial for certain FJR1300 motorcycles (i.e., those not previously repaired under 20V813). Yamaha will remedy this problem by:

Affected units must have the main axle and drive axle assemblies replaced with the stronger parts and the Engine Control Unit (ECU) reprogrammed to prevent excessive rpm leading to second gear damage. Units previously modified under campaign 20V813, previously reworked by the factory prior to sale will only be subject to ECU reprogramming.
