Wyoming has joined the growing list of states and regions with officialBackcountry Discovery Routes, better known as BDRs, and official maps and route information for the “WYBDR” is expected to be published on February 1st, according to BMW Motorrad, who is a primary sponsor of the project.

The Square State is thelatest addition to the BDR roster, which now includes nine western states and two large eastern U.S regions covering many more states. The middle of the U.S., the Southeast and my home state of Oregon, for some sad reason, remain unrepresented.

Meanwhile, Luciana Francisco, Head of Brand and Marketing for BMW Motorrad USA says “the new Wyoming Backcountry Discovery Route offers not only BMW adventure motorcycle riders but all dual-sport enthusiasts a once-in-a-lifetime experience in the majestic regions of Wyoming.”

The unveiling will be accompanied by a video overview of the route by Sterling Norden of theMotorcycle Travel Channel, who has documented numerous BDRs. Here’s one of his videos on the Maine section of the Northeast U.S. BDR:

The new video of the Wyoming BDR will also feature Wendy Naessens, an instructor at the recently opened U.S. BMW Performance Center Riding School. Here’s a thankfully long trailer for the Wyoming route video (below), which also features some hints as to where the route will go. A title in the video says the route is “a thousand mile adventure on the most remote BDR ever.” Sounds like our kind of riding.

The video preview shows a wide variety of riding terrain, from technical, rocky two-track to jeep trails, water crossings, rural pavement, forest roads and some almost-not-there roads. Wyoming is one of the least populated states so riders should definitely be prepared for self-sufficiency while traversing the route. Butler Motorcycle Maps will offer a waterproof folding map, and GPS/gpx files will be available from the BDR website for free.

Along with BMW, gear makerTouratechis another prominent BDR sponsor, and theWyoming Outdoor Recreationwas in on getting the WYBDR set up. Ride safe, and watch out for buffalos in the road. The BDR organization is a 503(c) non-profit andriders can support them with a donation or membership.
