Harley-Davidson is about to enter a time-hallowed ADV tradition, at least as far as the British Isles are concerned. So what is it? Will they sponsor a Charley-and-Ewan TV special? Nope, already done that. No, H-D is now branching out and opening an offroad training program, just like all the other big-name adventure bike makers.

We’ve seen news of the new training center on a couple of British moto-mag websites. It seems the MoCo has teamed up with former Dakar racer Mick Extance, who runs theMick Extance Offroad Experience Centrein Wales. The new program is expected to be called the Harley-Davidson Adventure Centre, andMCN saysit will run at Extance’s 1500-acre facility in the Berwyn Mountains.

The new school will have a two-fold role. First, you get the standard sort of training that these centers are aimed at—building basic skills in a controlled environment. Riders will learn how to handle their bike safely at slow speeds, and then pick up the pace, transitioning to trickier terrain to demonstrate and reinforce the skills they’ve learned.

Second, expect the school to have sort of a “demo truck” feel; with Harley-Davidson new to the world of adventure bikes, plenty of riders will be curious as to how the new bikes work in the real world. A day or two at an offroad training facility will allow them to see the bikes’ performance outside the careful, safe confines of a dealer demo ride.

It makes sense to have Extance run this program; he’s got Dakar cred (a seven-time racer at the event), he’s well-known in the world of moto training, and he’s also run similar events for Harley-Davidson in recent months.

If you’re interested in the program, keep an eye onExtance’s websitefor spring, 2022 dates. As for US and Canadian customers, stay tuned: No doubt we’ll soon see similar programs available in North America as well.
