Harley-Davidson is shutting down some of its production lines due to issues with components, although it’s not exactly clear what those issues are.

Back in mid-April, Harley-Davidson said it was experiencing some supply chain issues with semiconductor components, but this does not seem to be the case here. Instead. a report in the Milwaukee Sentinel-Journal says the move “out of an abundance of caution, is based on information provided by a third-party supplier to Harley-Davidson late on Tuesday concerning a regulatory compliance matter relating to the supplier’s component part.”

In other words: Some part that Harley-Davidson buys from an outside supplier (and there area lotof those on H-D’s bikes) is the cause of this problem, but the Motor Company’srelease to investorsimplies it’s a regulatory issue, not a supply issue.

At least, it doesn’t sound like a shortage of parts. So what’s going on?

Nobody’s reported on how many of Harley-Davidson’s workers will be affected, but both the Menomonee Falls and York factories are supposedly suspending V-twin production for two weeks. The only production continuing there is LiveWire’s electric motorcycle lineup, which could give us a hint as to which components are responsible for this shutdown. Again, with no word from Harley-Davidson, we cannot tell you if any other American operations or overseas factories are still working. With no indication of a more widespread closure in the bulletin for investors, we’d certainly assume that other production facilities will still be at work.

The closure also affects motorcycle shipments, so that means if you have a brand-new Pan America on order, expect that bike to be delayed.
