My everyday go-to hammock is the Eno Doublenest. I have a mosquito net and tarp that are easy to assemble for camping, but I mainly use the Eno as my backyard napping station. I leave the tree-saver straps attached to the trees and clip the hammock on with carabiners for an instant nest. I’ve also used this setup on multi-month motorcycle trips with the mozzy net and tarp.

What do all these hammocks have in common? They make it challenging to sleep flat. Sure, you can sleep asymmetrically and get a flatter surface, but front-sleeping isn’t possible unless you are a circus performer with an ultra-flexible back.

On an excursion in Belize, I had the pleasure of sleeping in a Tentsile tree tent. It’s a hammock-style tent stretched between three trees with high-quality ratchet straps. The one I slept in is built for two people, with the floor support strap between the two sleeping areas creating a boundary to prevent them from rolling or sliding into each other.

Even in the warm Belizean climate, I needed a blanket under me, but I could sleep on my side or my front. This Tensile Duo two-person tent hammock was great, especially when the sheep got out of the paddock and started wandering around, but I would not use it for motorcycle travel. It’s bulky and heavy, especially with the industrial-sized ratchets.

Enter The UNA One-Person Hammock Tent (3.0)

According to their website, the UNA offers a completely “flat-lay,” built-in no-see-um insect mesh, and removable rainfly. It packs up tiny and seems ideal for motorcycle adventures, although I haven’t tried it yet.
It weighs about 5 lb and packs into a ~14″ by 6″ by 6″ bag. The straps and ratchets are smaller, with a single pole. You could do without the ratchets if youmanually pull the straps tight.

Because the sides of the hammock don’t wrap around you, it feels much more like a tent than a hammock—much less constricting. The floor provides a sleeve for an air mattress or mat so you can stay warm, and I suspect it keeps the floor more level as well. Can you see this working as a bivy?

You set these hammocks up at about four feet in the air on at least a 10″ tree. Tentsile built the hammock to hold a 265lbs person. It has two inside storage nets and a large underneath net that can fit a backpack. If you want an open platform to gaze at the stars, you can remove the no-see-um mesh and rainfly.
