To begin with, you will find endless sources of expertise on the interwebs. Major red flag here: many are the claims to expertise, few are the true experts. Verify before you trust. Creators of fake sites are, er, expert at making them look attractive to readers – quite often by appealing to opinions and prejudices that they know are held by lots of people. Verify by cross-checking, and make sure you eliminate the “not many people know this” and “primitive tribesmen of Cleveland have been using this” kinds of sites. Yes, I know you know this. But don’t forget it.

The best website I have found for medical advice is that of the Mayo Clinic. Concise, well-written advice for medical dummies in easily accessible form. Look at https://www.mayoclinic.org at home before you go if you anticipate a medical problem, or check the site on the road. Explanations and treatments are usually free of over-medicalising, which means they often rely on, say, wrapping someone in a wet blanket rather than recommending hard-to-find and expensive drugs. There are also plentiful cross-references for details. A good and more loquacious backup is WebMD,https://www.webmd.com还有很多其他。

Call me a fossil, but I still prefer paper maps for navigation out in the countryside. Cities are different. Photo: The Bear

A general guide to staying alive under many difficult and dangerous conditions is “Stay Alive, A Handbook on Survival” ISBN 0 642 05982 9, a little A6 book published by the Australian Government Publishing Service. It is only about 17mm thick and will fit just about anywhere. I have the ‘heavy duty edition’, printed on plastic rather than paper and therefore water (and sweat, they claim) proof. While this is an Australian book it also contains much wider information, although none of it is motorcycle-specific. It is out of print; try to find the third edition second-hand.

Another non-motorcycle publisher (although to be fair they do occasionally include some bike-related advice) is Lonely Planet. Be aware of the books’ main limitation, namely that they sell in their thousands and therefore thousands of other travelers will use the same suggestions. Keep that in mind, and their highly reliable advice is useful. Sometimes quite remarkably so: a friend and I needed help to find a hotel at the Postojna Caves in Slovenia. We consulted the Lonely Planet guide, which told us that the woman at the Postojna tourist info centre was the rudest of her kind in the world. This was spot-on.

On the other hand, such offices can be remarkably useful. It is worth checking online resources and even contacting them for printed matter. But the most effective way to tap their expertise is in person, or by phone. I have been guided to the best value hotel which just happened to be having a sale, in Natchez; and given telephone numbers to call early in the morning to see if major New Orleans hotels were offering discount rooms for that day.

If you are looking at general online advice by people like me, try to discover if you have agreed with past recommendations they have made. If so, you’re more likely to agree with them in the future. Also, try to establish what their prejudices are and allow for them. That can be hard work. But who ever said that life, and especially motorcycle travel, was meant to be easy?

Apart from me.
