Walking the floor at AIMExpo this year, we came across a sophisticated electronic motorcycle training device, a device so sophisticated that participants can break into a workout sweat after only a few minutes of simulated riding and training. So what is the device we found? It’s a moving digital simulator calledMoto Trainer. More specifically, it offers two axes’ of movement and up to 60 degrees of lean angle. That lean angle is enough to allow you to get both your knee and elbow down. And you can do it while riding on your own race or street bike.

For sophistication, think about the types of simulators that Formula 1 teams use. Then add the ability to have a full-sized motorcycle lean and dive while negotiating maps of the actual circuits used in the MotoGP series. In addition, it uses sensors to tell it when you are on and off the throttle. Wind the throttle on, and the bike starts to stand up. Lean and reduce power, and the bike falls appropriately into the corner.

In addition, Moto Trainer also offers a wide selection of race circuits to train on. Moto Trainer can display all of the current MotoGP circuits and even your local circuit.

Training school tool

The Moto Trainer is so realistic that motorcycle training schools use it to help their riders increase their skills. But it’s not just for training beginning riders. Some pretty famous schools use the Moto Trainer to help their riders sharpen their skills. One of those schools is quite famous and has the initials VR and the number 46 in its name. I’m sure you can figure it out.

Part of the attraction of major racing schools is the fact that the Moto Trainer can provide detailed telemetry of the rider’s performance. It measures your skills using all the controls, including your use of the gearshift, front and rear brake, throttle, and lean angle. With the derived telemetry, you can measure and visually see your performance.

Different configurations

The Moto Trainer is not a toy and is available in various configurations. For example, it can be set up as the Moto Trainer Basic model to work with game/entertainment consoles or upgraded to Moto Trainer Simulator used by street riding training schools. And, of course, there’s the Moto Trainer Pro model, which racing schools and pro racers use.

As you might imagine, this technology is not inexpensive. For example, the Moto Trainer Basic model retails for about $5,200 and rises to $18,900 for the Moto Trainer Pro.

Want to try it?

The Moto Trainer will be at various events in 2023. They will be at Daytona Bike Week March 9 – 11 and the MotoGP round in Austin TX. There will be other dates in the US and Europe, so check out their website for more events as they are planned.

Moto Trainer also has a dirt bike version of the Moto Trainer. We’ll cover that in a future article.
