Brough Superior is back at it, releasing its latest model, the Lawrence. As always with Brough Superior machines, it’s expensive, it’s flashy, and it’s a mash-up of nostalgia and modern tech.

The name itself, of course, comes from T.E. Lawrence, aka Lawrence of Arabia. The British soldier/author was a massive fan of the original Brough Superior company, owning several machines and eventually meeting an untimely death when he crashed one of them.

The original Brough Superior machines are crude by today’s standards, but very advanced for their time, high-end machines that combined luxury with the performance. That’s what the reborne company is aiming for with the new Lawrence model. It has a DOHC liquid-cooled V-twin, with 997 cc capacity. Peak output is 102 horsepower, and 62 pound-feet of torque. Obviously, you’ll get much more jam out of a Ducati V4, but the Brough certainly has enough power to grossly exceed speed limits, and is aimed at real-world riding.

The Lawrence is built to carry a passenger, unlike the other bikes in Brough Superior’s new line. That’s not to say it’s a practical everyman’s bike; Brough Superior wants €66,000 for the Lawrence. That’s roughly $80,000 US, and only 188 machines will be made in this series.

What makes the Brough Superior Lawrence so expensive, besides the name on the gas tank, and the flashy retro styling? You’re paying for a lot of high-end materials: titanium frame and sub-frame, carbon-fibre gas tank and bodywork, Hossack-style front fork made of CNC aluminum, and an alu swinger that’s also CNC’d. All those expensive materials help keep weight down to 410 lb. That’s probably dry weight (the website doesn’t specify), but that’s certainly respectable for a retro bike that looks like it’s made of proper metal, not plastic.
