Here’s a move that might shake up the North American off-road scene: Fox Racing is about to be acquired by Vista Outdoors for more than half a billion dollars.
According to a write-up onPowersports Business, the deal sees Vista Outdoors paying $540 million USD for Fox Racing, with another $50 million dependent on the company’s performance post-takeover. Previously, Fox was owned by Altamont Capital Partners.
Aside from the huge pile of cash changing hands, why does it matter? It matters because Fox is huuuuuuuge in North America’s off-roading community. In business for more than 50 years, Fox has interests in all sorts of adventure sports (snowmobiles, street bikes, UTVs, 4×4 trucks), but particularly motocross. Go to any MX race, whether it’s buddies on a homebrewed backyard track or a massive pro event at a fan-filled stadium, and chances are you’ll see a Fox logo on a helmet or riding gear.
And now, it’s part of Vista Outdoors’ rapidly-growing empire. Vista owns a piece of almost every corner of the outdoors/adventure/motorsports world these days, it seems, including Bell helmets (see a full listhere). What will change under its ownership? Hard to say; Fox CEO Jeffrey McGuane is staying on, as part of the deal.
“Our partnership with Altamont has been crucial in strengthening our brand, driving growth, and building on a successful legacy that dates back to 1974,” McGuane said in a press release announcing the sale. “Altamont has been a great partner supporting our business and our employees and has put us in a position for continued success going forward. We’re grateful to Altamont for their support and excited for the future as part of the Vista Outdoor family.”
