Honda’s bringing a new motorcycle engine to market this year. It’s a rare occurrence, and when it happens, it’s worth taking note, because Honda will likely recycle this tech for a decade at least, and install it into a wide variety of machines.

It’s odd, then, that it’s taken this long for Honda to share important details of its new parallel twin. Although there are always patent leaks and other hints of new tech like this, we got our first official glimpse of the 750-class enginewhen Honda started showing off the new Hornet naked bike concept. But, Honda didn’t really release any useful information to English-language markets at that time, and even since, there’s been little info. So—consider this video below the first official info that many people will get from Honda.

Note that Honda still calls this a concept engine. Hmmmm. Does that mean all the rumors about a complete 750 lineup, including a new Transalp adventure bike, are just that—rumors? We can’t say for sure, but it’s hard to imagine we won’t see this platform debut at EICMA in November.

Honda gives us some details on the new motor. It’s nothing earth-shattering; a Unicam top end (with four valves per cylinder), with 755cc displacement, making 92 horsepower at 9,500 rpm and 55 pound-feet of torque at 7,250 rpm. That puts it down a bit on the hot parallel twins from KTM, but it’s more jam than the current parallel twin Honda uses for the NC750 series.

However, it seems likely this engine is aimed at a different market segment than the NC series as well. When those bikes debuted about a decade ago, they were all about affordable commuting. This new 755 engine seems aimed at a wider spectrum, with more emphasis on fun. No doubt fuel economy is still important (it always is, with Honda), but it seems unlikely we’ll see the same celebration of frugality that we got with the NC700 and its descendants and cousins. Stay tuned, we’re sure to know more by the end of this moto show season!
