2nd Update: BMW North America has reached out to us and confirmed that the below statement is correct. They will provide us with updated info as soon as they are able.
It seems that BMW North America’s stop-sale order affects both the United States and Canada.According to a report from BMW MOA的,一个ficial statement from BMW says that the problem is not safety related and stems from an issue with a component in its motorcycles’ evaporative system. The reported statement is as follows:
“BMW of North America is dedicated to providing vehicles to our customers that meet their expectations. To ensure that our vehicles are of the highest industry standards, BMW performs ongoing testing and evaluation.
Following a recent quality analysis, BMW is pursuing measures to further evaluate the material used in a component of its motorcycle evaporative system, which may not have been produced to material specifications.
As a result, BMW of North America is issuing a temporary, voluntary stop sale for all new and pre-owned BMW motorcycle models in dealer inventory, except for the CE 04.
This temporary stop sale is not safety related and BMW owners may continue to ride their motorcycles as normal.”
BMW’s statement that it is pursuing measures to further “…evaluate the material used…” in its motorcycle’s evaporative system, it’s possible that when the evaluation is complete, BMW will release the order without taking any further action. However, considering how much the stop sale order is costing BMW and its dealers, it’s more likely that some kind of remedy will need to be implemented at what could be a very significant cost.
Since both new and used motorcycles in dealer inventories are covered by the stop sale, you do have to wonder how far-reaching this problem may be. But it also does point to the fact that BMW is proactively reacting to the issue on its own using an approach that could be very costly. While all motorcycle manufacturers do have to comply with governmental regulations, BMW Motorrad has chosen to issue a stop sale order before the results of their investigation are known. This suggests the issue is real and that they are aggressively attempting to address it.
