Back in late November, BMW finally revealed its S1000 R naked bike. We had a pretty good overview of the machine then, but now BMW’s released a new promo vid that shows more of the thought process behind the machine’s development.

We’d been expecting the S1000 R for a while, after BMW launchedthe updated S1000 XRat EICMA back in 2019 (here’srtwpaul’s look at the bikefrom IMS Long Beach last year). When the XR launched, it was obviously closely related to the latest-gen S1000 RR superbike, but there were some key differences. That’s the story with the S1000 R as well.

Most importantly, the S1000 R engine does not have variable valve timing. BMW’s gone big on VVT lately, using Shiftcam technology on its R1200 GS adventure bike as well as the S1000 RR superbike. The S1000 XR didn’t get the Shiftcam top end though, and neither does the S1000 R.

What it does get, is 165 horsepower at 11,000 rpm, and 84 pound-feet of torque at 9,250 rpm. That’s basically the same as the previous model, although the new engine is supposed to be tuned to make max power across a wider rpm range. Of course, it’s also Euro5-friendly, which is very important these days!

The S1000 R shares the same basic chassis as the RR model: Same frame, same swingarm. It also gets the same 6.5-inch TFT screen (Bluetooth-enabled, of course), and the same basic electronics package. And, as explained in the video above, you can also upgrade it with an M performance package, just like a BMW car.

Expect the S1000 R in North America for spring 2021 selling season.
