NOTE: National Cycle gave us the Deflector Screen at no cost.

My wife Kim (@Butterqwup) has been riding a Ducati Scrambler Icon since 2016. She says it fits her perfectly and is capable enough for street, dirt, and two-track roads. But over the years, her little Duc has fallen to the earth both on and off-road more than a few times. And as a result, a fair number of windscreens have sacrificed their lives.

Her current windshield has a starburst-like crack in it, likely taken from the roost of my bike. (Sorry about that, Kim.) Anyway, it was getting pretty worn out from years of bouncing over rutted and washboarded surfaces and collecting mud and debris from the soggy calcium chloride covered roads we have ridden on.

So when we met with Paul Gomez, National Cycle’s Sales and Marketing Manager, we talked about which National Cycle windshield could replace the broken one on her 800cc Duc. Paul said theNational Cycle Deflector Screen; U-Clamp Mount setup should work fine. And he took one off the display stand to show us. But when he said Kim could have the display model, we were surprised and grateful.

National Cycle Deflector dimensions

The windshield is nicely sized for the Scrambler. It’s not too tall and provides a good amount of wind protection for Kim’s 5′ 2″ frame. But it isn’t overly big, which is nice since Kim looks over her windshields, not through them. It has a “traditional” shape with a wide bottom section that narrows towards the top. Its overall dimensions are 14″ tall (from the cutout to the top) and 15 ” at its widest point at the bottom.

Construction

It’s made from polycarbonate, which National Cycle’s website says has 10 times the impact resistance and more than 20 times the crack resistance of standard acrylic. That sounds pretty impressive, but we will have to wait to see how well it stands up when Kim’s Duc decides its next hard landing is necessary.

National Cycle also says that this windshield uses Qantum® Hardcoated Polycarbonate, which they say is more than 10 times more scratch resistant than FMR Hardcoated Polycarbonate. We intend to find out how scratch resistant it really is.

Installation

Installation is a straightforward affair. All that is necessary is to attach a couple of clamps to the bike’s handlebars. Then you place a pair of steel arms into the handlebar clamps and windshield clamps. Next, tighten the bolts, and you are done. Now, the windshield is securely held in place.

One nice feature of the setup is that it allows you to adjust the windshield for rake. As such, you can adjust it for wind protection and airflow. It also has the side effect of lowering or raising the windshield.

Pricing

The National Cycle Deflector Screen™ (N25030) has an MSRP of $139.95.
