Canister Removal

Just need a little sanity check. I don't feel like pulling the whole tank, it's full and I'm still injured, but I do want to get rid of the charcoal canister to make room under the seat.

If I remove it, I should be able to just plug the line going to the the valve and leave the tank vent under the seat right? Or is there a need to reroute the tank vent line?

Also, if I just plug the valve line will the bike throw errors when it tries to pull from the canister?

Vent hose should be re-routed. There is a dongle to eliminate any error codes, supplied in a kit you can purchase from Rottweiler.

The tank vents aggressively when it is hot. You don't want vapors spewing there or have gas dump under your seat if your bike tips

Thanks. The cannister just vents under the seat so I figured it'd be fine, hadn't really considered fuel coming out. wonder if I can just pull it somewhere near the tail section instead of routing it to the other vent lines.

Oh and, the rottweiler solution is to remove the valve, which I'm not planning on. Just not sure if the sensor is just a "hey I'm not here anymore" or a "hey I'm still here but not working correctly" kind of thing.

Removed my canister to allow me to place the tool kit and puncture repair stuff in the tail.
Blocked and sealed one pipe and tucked it away in the tail, pulled the vent pip through the frame and re routed under the seat and heat cover and through a small gap in the frame which allowed me to feed it to the other drain points with no kinks and no tank removal.

Did exactly that, thanks! Wasn't much room but I got it snaked through after a bit. I did check and recheck that it was the right one, think I inhaled some gas fumes, there goes a few more brain cells.

Removed the entire system. Not much trouble pulling vent lines from charcoal filter. But, connecting new lines to throttle bodies was annoying due to space constraints. No issues with electronics afterwards. Re-routed tank vent along left frame and behind pegs.

did you notice any intermittent noises the bike made prior to removing the sas emissions canister, probably coming from the air box, usually very audible at slow speed or idle engine speeds


if there was any weird noises, did the removal of the sas stop these noises,

ive just started a thread on the weird noises the 1290 makes from new

I'm planning on doing the removal on my '15 1190, using this video as a reference:
No other additions or mod's associated at this time, just the removal for tool storage purposes.

Anyone have any good advice to add specifically to this video? I like this vid' due to my low OJT mx moto skills level....("yes" I have used the search function)

The canister for sure has nothing to do with that and I doubt it's the SAS too. No need to ask the same question in a bunch of threads.

Also, you don't need to do all the Rottweiler BS if you just want to free up storage space. Zero need to remove the solenoid and buy dongles.

I pulled mine but left the vacuum hose capped under the seat. Saw no reason to pull it.
BUT I'm pretty sure that the 1290R/S do not have the one way valve for the vent hose.

I dropped my bike after removing the can and lost a bit of fuel. Have not verified that yet.

I don't think there is any dongle needed. I pulled my charcoal canister, plugged one line and rerouted the other 10k miles ago. I have yet to get any error codes. I believe you're thinking of the SAS.

just watched your suggested video , if i were you id watch rotweilers video.......i dont think that rear seat body work needs to come off really....although i have a 2017 1290 sa-r which is slightly different body wise.... for some reason he did not remove the valves of the side of the cylinders and blank them off....???

Rotweiler has you to remove the solenoid for the canister too. if you did that you'd need a dongle. But that's pointless imo.

You're confusing the SAS with the canister. The video he is just doing the canister to free up space under the seat.

ill be doing this soon on mine ..ill use the full stage 3 kit tho... cant stand the noise the sas makes

ahhh, fair enough...i did no read properly

I went to pull my canister shortly after buying the bike (1290SAR) and the canister wasn't even hooked up. Neither line and never any error codes. I rerouted the vent to the other vent lines in front, plugged the line from the pump and left it under the seat. No error codes and I have the tool kit, a plug kit and a tire pump in it's place. Deviant is right, you only need the Rottweiler kit if you remove the plumbing. I may do that later, like when I have to pull the tank for something.
