After introducing the street-and-trail V-Strom 800 DE model in 2022, Suzuki is about to bring out a more road-oriented version of the bike in coming weeks.

The news comes from the paperwork gurus atMotorcycle.com, who say the new machine is going to come to Switzerland and the US, according to documents filed with regulators in those jurisdictions. According to MO:

Suzuki’s CARB executive order for 2023 lists just three models using its 776cc engine, the GSX-8S, the V-Strom 800DE, and the V-Strom 800DE Adventure. For 2024, Suzuki added a third non-DE V-Strom 800 variant.

We only have to look at the larger V-Strom range to give us a clue of what to expect from the V-Strom 800. The V-Strom 1050 (non-DE) comes with a 19-inch cast wheel, shorter-travel suspension, a shorter swingarm, and a narrower handlebar.

The data from the Swiss filings would suggest the V-Strom 800 would be similar. The filings confirm a 19-inch front wheel, with a 110/80-19 tire with a 44U rating, compared to the 90/90-21 43T tire on the V-Strom 800DE.

So it’s not just a change of tires, then. The change in wheels from 21-inch to 19-inch front, along with new suspension and handlebar makes it sound like this will be more akin to the differences between BMW’s F850 GS and the F750 GS—not completely different models, but obviously focused on different tasks.

The word on the street is that the new Strom will be about 15 pounds lighter than the current offroad-focused DE model as well.

Presumably, this will also mean a lower MSRP, which might help the new Suzuki compete with other lower-priced adventure bikes on the market. The new Honda Transalp is expected to come into the US at a lower price than the V-Strom 800DE. A lower-priced street model, which is all that most riders really need anyway, might help Suzuki move more units.
