Project GS 700 completed

I've had both the 700 and the 800 and find this motor more friendly when doing long trips in my opinion, just seems to have more lowdown usable power. So the history, I had the 2014 GS 800 for two years , Myself been a short stock build person found my toes tippy toeing while stopped, Sold that and brought a DR 650 kept that for 4 months , didn't like the long haul rides. A situation came up where somebody wanted to swap my bike with his GS 700. Thought i would at least go and have a look. Felt nice comfortable and a bit more power, it also had spoke wheels put on it. Deal was done .

    Welcome to the board! Very nicely done project. I really like that paint scheme and the wheels. I think that clutch lever extension is a good idea for slow riding like in traffic. I got hung up in some traffic jams where traffic was crawling for miles; it got agonizing on my left hand. I did go to a 16T sprocket and it was a game changer for me. Takeoff is much better and stronger. Slow maneuvering power is easier to control. Pulling through mountain twisties is better. It feels like the bike has more low end "grunt" which is a trait I like about my Bonneville.

    On the clutch side of things , the extension at this stage is just experimental prototype. It took the pulling the required from 8 Kg to 3.5 Kg using a pulling scale / suite case scale from eBay. I was looking at the hydraulic conversion but that was out of my budget. From the photo you will see that all i have done is added a piece to the end of the lever. This extension also puts the cable at a different angle, not much but different. now that I have ridding a few Ks on the bike I'm sure its going to work. So from here its make a one piece lever up, and maybe weld up old adjustment hole in case and re drill on the angle to suit. should get out of it well under $50.00 AU which to me is pretty good.

    Nice work, Dodders. The paint really suits the bike, and you should think about offering to sell the clutch extension online once you're happy with the design.

    I could be looking at it wrong, but it would seem that length the cable travels remains unchanged,

    Thanks for your comment, it gave me food for thought!
    Remember this is only experimental and i am no "angleoligest" but i did go out and do some measuring.
    Going on a 25 deg rotation of the clutch arm from the pivot point on the casing, in the standard position the clutch arm (end) moved approx 30 mm.

    Remembering with extension it changes the angel. What this refers to is , by the time you take into consideration of the arm , the rod going through to the center of the clutch
    and the rocker in the clutch arm the alteration of the angel is minimal as well as the engage or dis-engage of the clutch. However the idea was to use the old "the longer the pivot leaver,
    the easier the pull" theory. Hence the less effort it takes to pull the lever in. The reduction was nearly half effort measured with a pull scale . It did take a bit of adjustment of the clutch cable
    but to me it works perfectly and long rides or city traffic are easily achieved with no sore hand. Hopes this helps

    I'll have to think about it for mine... makes me wonder why bike-designers don't make the arms a little longer to begin with???:hmmmmm

    I can understand your confusion. Am I considering parting with it? Yes . Just considering, it will take a good bike to make me part with this. I get restless once I've completed a project I start looking for another one. The way i see it

    我明白了。我修改和改变事情,看到how interest can wane. As far as bikes go, for my back road exploration, the F7 and 8 are hard to beat from my survey of the competition. My bike is the factory lowered (upgraded w/ Hyperpro springs) and I thought about raising it, but don’t see the need. For what I ride and use it for, it’s about perfect and I don’t need the extra clearance or suspension travel.

    I went down the windshield journey a ways and found this to be a very good option:

    This is the GIVI 5107DT with a MRA touring spoiler. I’m 5’11”, wear a Arai Vector 2 helmet, and ear plugs. I get minimal buffeting except for gusty days. I’ve also found a helmet chin curtain improves wind noise
