Looking for some bike protection for my 1290 SAR. Having trouble finding some things, and want input on others!

具体来说,刹车盘/ bash板,也许一些axle and frame sliders, and a headlight protector. Idk what else...

    Having trouble picking out stuff.

So far I’m looking at alt rider skid plates and Puig headlight protectors.

    What do you guys/gals use?

Loving my BlackDog skid w/ sidestand relocation and Acerbis X-Factor hand guards. I should probably look at a headlight protector......Before it breaks!

Take a look at the Touratech Rallyform skidplate. I looked at everything before deciding on that and I couldn't be happier. It's taken some hard ass hits and there isn't a single dent. Fantastic piece of kit.

I actually saw them. I’m not a fan of the looks at all... it looks “retro” to me. Like an old dirt bike type bash plate. Nothing wrong with that but I’m not a fan on the 1290.

I do like the looks of the black dog skid plate though.

I didn’t think about hand guards though. The factory ones are okay, but are solid plastic. Think I’ll wait till one breaks to fix that.

+1 I have the Blackdog skid plate, Outback Motortek upper crash bars, Tusk D-Flex handgaurds. If I throw it down it should still be rideable. Hope to finish a Machining project this weekend and have a headlight guard in place with the prefilters.

That is the one negative of the puig headlight protector. You can’t use the pre filters. Which I might want later on. Mostly if I ride off-road in groups.

Touratech makes one that works with the filters but is a metal cage. I like the transparent plastic of the Puig. If only puig would spend the time to make it work right... maybe I can rig something up... :)

    Separate question.

has anybody ever seen or had trouble with the factory kickstand mounting location on the engine?

KTM uses the engine as a stress member on a lot of their bikes. I’d assume it wouldn’t hurt anything...

Well funny you should mention the Puig. My solution is exactly just for that. But it will require some modification of the headlight protector. We will see.
There are stories of the side stand breaking the case. Mainly from hitting a rutted trail or road and striking a rock. I have not seen photos but it gets it away from the shifter. And I like that.
Someone posted a picture of the Touratech skid plate and it looked like a ruffles chip after a couple of rides.

Keep me updated on how you manage to do that.

You have a nice bike setup too. I like it. What tires are you on?

Right now I’m spent. Just bought the bike with a good down payment. Then spent about $4k in various riding gear. I’m set for 4 seasons as well as casual riding wear. Got my Cardo Packtalk slim too. Love the Packtalk.

All that is left is to start adding on to the bike. I need luggage and some good protection for off-road use. First thing is going to have to be the bash/skid plate. We have a LOT of rocks here on our trails and service roads. I’m scared to ride it out there without the plate.

I bought a power parts said plate at a pretty steep discount when I bought my 1090. The factory fasteners are garbage, but that's a $10 fix.

It's taken some hard hits and held up fine.

Also running Tusk hand guards. They're not much for wind protection, but I'm sure they've saved my levers more than once.

Between the factory crash bars on front and Bumot luggage rack on the back, not much of the tender bits touch the ground on a fall.

I'll probably add some kind of case guards to keep the brake lever and shifter from causing any problems, but I think I'm done after that.

I am on Dunlop Trailmax missions. They seem to do well and easily out handle TKC80s on the road. They handle dirt and gravel well I have not been in either sand or mud yet.
I will post my headlight guard idea once it is done. But I am stealing the mount idea of the Touratech but mine will be machined aluminum. We will see how it looks.

I saw that one. Didn’t want to drill the hole for the top to be secured.

You are right it’s not but I can do that if my project does not work out. I enjoy a challenge and working with my hands. If this one works out it will be a one off piece that I spent time with my bro making and I won’t have an extra hole.

Don't get hung up on looks. When you see one up close you'll know what I mean. To each his own I guess but just one more thing to think about. The Touratech model is race proven.

I just finished installing mine Thursday. Really pretty simple and straight forward. I read the instructions but went a different route. Fitted the lower mounts then chose where to drill the upper hole. Mine was drilled just above the locking tab.

I've got the Puig headlight protector and the pre filters, it can be done. The pre filters are two parts, you can seperate them and slip the Puig bracket between them.
