    Hey all,

Ive got an 07 990s that has 100,000km. Running strong with not "too" much engine noise. I do all the normal maintenance like valves/oil/fuel filters etc but was wondering when you blokes start looking at cam chains and tensioners? ??

Does anyone have a walkthrough to replace the tensioners?

Is it even worth just replacing the tensioners without replacing the cam chain??

    Is it a hard job??

    Thanks guys

Relatively easy job. I did it on my 2009.Be sure to fill them with engine oil before installing them.

I've changed mine when it developed a rattle in cold starts. Easy job in the SE, just open plug, take old tensioner out, put new one in, bolt the plug, ride. The Adv probably requires taking the tanks of.
They do wear and start leaking between the shaft and the cylinder. When you fill the new and the worn one with oil and press them between your fingers, the worn one leaks. I wouldn't fill the new one completely for this particular reason. If you pump it full, it doesn't compress and might get the chain a bit tight. Partially filled, it'll make a small rattle in the start up, fill up with oil pressure and be done.

There is a Allen key plug on the front left side of the front cylinder and the front right side of the rear cylinder. Open the plug, pull the old tensioner out and put the new one in. The tensioner on my hand and the rear cyl plug can be seen right behind it. A magnet is handy for pulling the tensioner out. And put new copper washers under the plug.

On the adventure you need to loosen oil tank to get clearence enough to get the front one out.
