MRA screens or cut down 1250GS OEM windscreen?

I previously owned a 2016 GS and actually had the vario touring spoiler that I usually had clamped on. I now own a 2019 1250 GS and need to make a decision on buying another MRA screen or cutting down the OEM bmw screen. I’m hoping that someone with a similar issue may have some direct input.

这是这个问题。我买了我的第一个dv helmet a few weeks ago (aria XD-4). I love most things about the helmet, especially the field of view..oh my! However, once I get to about 50mph and above, the low frequency drumming / buffeting is nasty. It’s not moving my head around, but it’s really really annoying. I’ve figured out that it’s related to the peak. What’s interesting is that I can put my hand on the peak pivot (apply pressure) or the center of the peak and greatly reduce the buffeting. However, I can also just stand up and get my head in clean air and the buffeting goes away too. Weird.

I was excited when I first figured it out. Thought all I had to do was tighten the peak screws. But that hasn’t helped unfortunately.

I’m already wearing foam earplugs, so no need to make that suggestion.

So, what do you think? Is there some trick to modifying the XD-4? Time to cut down the OEM screen? Or, would a MRA screen make more sense?

    Appreciate it,

Riding a 2009 GS. I had the same issue with the stock and an aftermarket windscreen with the same Arai helmet. I ended up taking the visor off the helmet for daily riding, and then put it back on when I’m planning on riding when I suspect I’ll need it.

I love the helmet, but the visor at highway speeds is not good.

I don't understand why people buy helmets like this if they plan on doing any speed or distance on the road. Even if you get a smaller windshield I would think the wind would put upwards pressure that after a while would be uncomfortable to say the least.

I use the Puig racing screen on my ’19 GSA. Lowered fully, I’m in “clean” air, no buffering. However, I’m wearing a Schuberth C3 Pro, not an ADV helmet.

What has worked for many with the XD-4 is to attach a lead sticky weight to the under side of the peak to stop the buffeting.
How much weight, you must determine.

Shoei Hornet ADV + 2010 GS here. Same issue but I put one of those windscreen extenders and it's perfect now.
You'll be surprised how effective a peak is at blocking glare when riding into the sunrise/sunset, especially paired together with a good pair of polarised sunglasses. i guess it's the same reason why some people choose caps over sunglasses... or choose to wear both together.

Oh and cause Ewan and Charlie wore them. ;D

RichardD - the strange part though, as I mentioned previously, is that if I stand on the bike and am in clean air, the buffeting disappears. My guess would be that there’s enough wind pressure under the peak to create a constant lift to remove any vibration/buffeting. However, when behind the windscreen there’s not enough of that same pressure to keep the peak from vibrating a certain way?:dunnoI’m not bothered by undue pressure when turning my head or anything like that. Just the dam buffeting!

Thank you for the other replies. I think I will experiment by riding with no windscreen first and see what that yields. The weights on peak sounds interesting!

    Thanks,

Seems to me the peak was made out of recycled ice cream tub lids ....Im in Oz you may have different ice cream tubs in the U.S.?

It can and will just try raising the seat height:wave:snore:imaposer

Get some of your Fav colour Duct Tape and run some 'supportive / tie down' strips

    Me too

See above and raise the screen

Time to cut down the OEM screen?
Not in my experience raise it !

I hated the OEM windscreen on my 2018 GS and opted for a Puig screen that is a few inches taller than the stock screen. When raised up a couple turns the Puig throws air up over my helmet creating a nice quiet pocket of air around my helmet. With the stock screen, even at max height, I still received a lot of buffeting and wind blast that made riding at highway speeds uncomfortable. The OEM GSA screen on my 2020 GSA wasn't tall enough either so I transferred the Puig from my 2018 GS to my 2020 GSA and now I can ride at 75+ and not get beat up by the wind. The Puig was about $140 on Revzilla.

I am 6'2" tall and use the XD-4 with a National Cycle Vstream Touring with great results. A windscreen extender can also work well.

我使用了我1250 gs和S1000XR XD-4great results. If it didn't I wouldn't use it. It works just fine at speed and/or distance without any issue. It did not work on my Tuono so I used an Arai Corsair X. I try different helmets with different bikes to find out what works best. I hate wind noise and have some hearing loss so I will WHATEVER I can to reduce noise as much as possible. Cost is of no concern in my quest.
